iCardio

Integrated wearable, sensor & hospital data for smart cardiology

Project description

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide according to World Health Organisation. The related mortality rate is influenced by many factors at population level (such as genetic predisposition, physical and cultural environment) and at individual-level behavior (smoking, diet and exercise) and by the availability and effectiveness of acute interventions when cardiovascular events occur. By 2025, the World Heart Federation has pledged to help reduce premature mortality caused by cardiovascular disease (CVD) by 25%. It is an ambitious goal and the achievement is the solution of specific problems and bottlenecks in the current workflow. The development of data and connected care technologies will have a considerable impact on this target, however one common challenge is that although a lot of technology-related initiatives are ongoing increasing the amount and the quality of healthcare related data, technology has yet to find a useful and reliable way to harness or share the data it collects. One of the main barriers for implementing connected technology into the treatment of CVD is the sheer volume of data it would present and that data not necessarily translating into actionable and easy to interpret information for the health care providers and the patient. iCardio will develop an integrated solution for Cardiology which will • integrate cardiology data collected in the hospital with personal health information collected after discharge ( at home, work etc.) for improved long term patient management. • Transform data into actionable and interpretable information for Clinical Decision Support System The solution will improve clinical outcome of cardiology patients by enabling better and timely decisions from the cardiologist, self-management and insights for the patients and the informal caregivers like family member around them. The market tackled by iCardio is very relevant. The overall healthcare IT market is estimated to be around EUR 2.5 billion in Europe. The global cardiovascular information systems market is expected to reach EUR 800 million by 2020 from EUR 550 million in 2015, at a CAGR of 8.1%. In this space partner in iCardio have a leaderships positions and thank to the project results will improve and extended the product portfolio in Healthcare informatics. iCardio brings together a focused consortium from Finland and the Netherlands with complementary expertise covering the whole market and technology value chain. The consortium includes healthcare end-users which will contribute to the validation of the business ambition and the achievement of the related goals.
