In my previous Post I shared with you some unique results from ENTOC to master the engineering optimisation for production lines and from VMAP to ensure simulation engineering optimisation for materials. These two unique results are at the end of the industry chain on the production line itself.
Today I want to share with you some unique results arising at the very beginning of the industry chain, at the design level. But even I would say it is more revolutionary than that. There is no more start or end, I want to speak about the actual full digital loop when you acquire a bunch of data on all the usage of a deployed product/service to continuously adapt the product/service you are selling.
The ITEA project REFLEXION builds and demonstrates such a full digital loop on different kinds of products. The target of the project was to react fast to any effects observed in the field by evaluating and learning from the extracted usage information.

The R&D programme dilemma is to define a detailed roadmap to select the best proposals on this roadmap. This detailed roadmap has to be defined when everybody is more and more conscious that we are in front of a “wall of innovations”. The key question is not so much to have an idea of innovation rather than to decide on where to invest.
Thus when an R&D programme is too directive with the support of so-called experts, many companies may feel that the programme and its experts are pointing in the right direction. They try to respond as best as possible along these directions. The result is that the companies innovate in the direction proposed by the R&D programme and the R&D programme becomes the actual customer.

The ITEA board decided to strengthen even more the business orientation of the ITEA programme by setting up customer and end-user workshops. The target of these new workshops is to clarify the international customers and end-user needs and to build our future ITEA proposals from these actual urgent demands.
The theme of the first workshop was Smart City and gathered several cities, industrials and SMEs.
The quality of the job done during this workshop will ensure that we now have the right input to set up ITEA proposals on Smart City with high potential. We forecast several proposals during our next PO Days, taking place on 22-23 September in Brussels.

The ITEA SoRTS project gathers two worldwide leaders, Philips for the imaging system and Elekta for the therapy tools, supported by few complementary partners. SoRTS’ main innovation is the real-time integration of imaging and therapy tools to increase the productivity and efficiency of treatments. It is easy to understand the impact on our citizens’ health and the level of required innovation to ensure this real-time integration. SoRTS has all the characteristics of a very innovative research project with high impact potential.

I have read that the economic crisis is coming from an innovation crisis. I am a bit doubtful about that when I observe the amount of new ideas popping up in all our ITEA proposals and projects.
Indeed, we are living in a tremendous time for engineers due to the digitisation of the world (sensors, internet of things, social networks) and ubiquitous communication (NFC, bluetooth, wifi, 4G). You just have to gather few engineers in a brainstorming session, and you can be sure to generate twenty new ideas for business. All of them will not generate profitable business but a few of them surely will. The challenge is not a lack of new ideas but the means to test a lot of ideas of business.
